The SafeKey system features a GPS-enabled key-fob "check" module. According to PeopleNet, it acts as a portable "insurance policy" for supporting drivers' personal safety, and minimizing cargo theft. SafeKey also provides an optional impairment configuration to strengthen compliance with the CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) regulations of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Using SafeKey, the driver initiates an "SOS" panic button located on the check module while up to 100 feet away from the tractor. The remote signal sends a real-time alert to a round-the-clock monitoring service or dispatch department via text and e-mail, identifying the driver's precise location. The vehicle can be remotely disabled via the network, preventing engine engagement. Results are saved on a secure server for fleet-management review.
