Checkpoint Systems Inc. has created the Open EPC (Electronic Product Code) Number Management Solution for apparel retailers and suppliers. The application can help users to manage the unique tag numbers that are required for hundreds of millions of items, the vendor said. The required identifier consists of the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), which specifies the type of item, plus serialization data, which uniquely defines it. Proper management of the numbers is essential to ensuring the data integrity needed to extract the full value of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, according to Checkpoint. Its cloud-based software application is based on open standards. Users can distribute EPC numbers to consuming applications, such as service bureau providers and in-plant label printing, worldwide. The technology eliminates the risk of number duplication, which can lead to inventory inaccuracy. Available immediately, the Open EPC Number Management Solution was built on the OAT Foundation Suite.
