There are two sides to trade regulation. One is the obvious burden that it places on importers and exporters. The other can lead to new process efficiencies, better shipment visibility and an overall reduction in costs. That’s the contention of Tammy Hetrick, senior trade adviser with logistics services provider A.N. Deringer, Inc. She joins us on this episode to discuss how compliance with Customs rules can help small companies to compete with their bigger rivals. Examples of beneficial programs include the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT), Importer Self-Assessment (ISA) program and the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill. Programs both voluntary and mandatory can serve as the basis for “uncovering land mines in your supply chain” and minimizing costly disruptions, Hetrick says.
